Overview
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Itinerary
The turbulent history of this city began when a great flood in 1341 opened the estuary at Kochi, previously a landlocked region, transforming it into one of the world's finest natural harbors. Kochi thus became a haven for seafaring visitors from around the globe and became the first European ship-city in India when the Portuguese settled here in the 15th century. The Dutch seized Fort Kochi from the Portuguese in 1663, and later, in the final phase of the colonial saga, the British took the city in 1795. During the 1660s, Fort Kochi reached its zenith as a major trading center, and its fame spread far and wide—in various ways as a wealthy merchant hub, an important military base, a vibrant cultural center, a center for large shipbuilding, a center for Christianity, and so on. Today, centuries later, the city is home to approximately thirteen communities.
We begin with a tour of the city.
The old Cochin area is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world. Its history stretches back nearly 2,000 years. In 1948, the community numbered 2,500, but today there are fewer than 30. The community remains centered around Jewtown, where we will visit its crown jewel, the Paradesi Synagogue. Built in 1568 and rebuilt after a Portuguese bombardment in 1662, the synagogue is distinguished by its tiled roof and bell tower. The small synagogue is also known for its hand-painted, blue and white willow-patterned Chinese tiles, and the many bronze and crystal lamps hanging from the ceiling. Afterward, we will visit the interesting International Pepper Exchange, also located in Jewish Town. We will also see
Chinese fishing nets —Chinese fishing nets constructed from teak wood and bamboo poles, working on the principle of balance. Records indicate that the first settlement here was between 1350 and 1450. Vasco da Gama Square, the narrow promenade parallel to the beach, is the best place to see the nets being hauled in from the sea. Learn about the workings of fascinating Chinese fishing nets constructed from teak and bamboo poles, which operate on the principle of balance. Other important sites include Vasco da Gama Square, the Basilica of Santa Cruz, St. Francis Church, the Cov Gate, the Baluarte Bungalow, and Mattancherry Palace. In the afternoon, enjoy a performance of various South Indian dance and martial arts.
