Detailed Day-by-Day Expedition Program

Arrive at Leh Airport and feel the immediate bite of the Himalayan winter. A Travel Astu representative will transfer you to a heated hotel. This day is strictly for acclimatization. Stay indoors, hydrate, and allow your body to adjust to the significant drop in temperature and oxygen.

Overnight: Leh (Heated Hotel)

A scenic drive to Chilling, where the road ends and the ice begins. Step onto the "Chadar" for the first time—a short introductory trek to Tilat Sumdo. Learn the "penguin walk" technique on the slick ice under the guidance of your Astu ice-expert.

Overnight: Tilat Sumdo (Expedition Camp)

A 6-hour trek covering 9km. The canyon walls begin to close in, and the river ice takes on surreal patterns. Navigate around open water leads and learn to read the ice thickness with your guides.

Overnight: Tsomo Paldar (Expedition Camp)

An 8-hour, 14.5km trek through some of the most dramatic sections of the Zanskar gorge. Pass through caves and beneath overhanging icicles. Your Astu cook will have hot soup and high-energy meals waiting at the Tibb campsite.

Overnight: Tibb (Expedition Camp)

The highlight of the trek. A 7-hour journey leading to the legendary frozen waterfall at Nerak. This breathtaking sight marks the most remote point of our journey. Experience the deep silence of a river completely locked in ice.

Overnight: Nerak (Expedition Camp)

The Zanskar River changes hourly; the path you took yesterday may look entirely different today. Begin the trek back, seeing the canyon from a new perspective as you head downstream toward Tibb.

Overnight: Tibb

Continue the return leg toward Shingra Koma. This area is known for its spectacular ice formations and frequent sightings of the elusive Blue Sheep on the high cliffs above the river.

Overnight: Shingra Koma

Complete the final trek to Tilat Do. Your private Travel Astu vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to the luxury of a heated hotel in Leh. Enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and a farewell dinner.

An early morning transfer to Leh Airport for your flight back to Delhi, carrying the "sweet memories" and the incredible achievement of conquering the Chadar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Travel Astu manage the -30°C temperatures?

Safety is our core mission. Travel Astu (also known as Astu) provides high-quality, winter-grade sleeping bags and insulated tents. Our high-altitude cooks prepare hot, calorie-dense meals frequently to maintain body heat, and our guides monitor all guests for signs of frostbite or cold-related stress.

Is the medical check-up mandatory?

Yes. Local regulations require a 3-day acclimatization period and a medical clearance from the SNM Hospital in Leh. Travel Astu Pvt Ltd facilitates this entire process, including the paperwork and transport to the hospital, to ensure you are legally and physically cleared for the ice.

What happens if the ice melts or is too thin?

The Chadar is a living entity. Our Astu ice-guides have years of experience reading the river. If a section is "weak," we utilize mountain bypasses or wait for the ice to reform. Your safety always takes precedence over the itinerary.

What gear do I need to bring?

While you provide your personal layers, Astu Travel provides the specialized gumboots (essential for the ice), tents, and sleeping bags. We will provide a detailed "Winter Layering Guide" upon booking to ensure you are packed for -30°C.

Are permits and environmental fees included?

Absolutely. We handle all Wildlife Permits, ALTOA fees, and environmental taxes. With Astu, there are zero hidden costs; your focus remains entirely on the trek.
